Following protests at the Michigan Capitol building in Lansing yesterday and the Michigan Legislature’s decision not to extend the state of emergency, Governor Whitmer signed new emergency and disaster declaration last night. “Today I signed new emergency and disaster declarations using independent sources of statutory authority to make sure our healthcare workers and first-responders have the tools they need to save lives and protect Michiganders,” she said in a press release. It is the governor’s belief that the declaration gives her the right to create rules and laws without Legislative approval or discussion. The legality of such a declaration is not yet clear. The declaration is scheduled to last until May 30, but she is expected to be extending that order again at that point.

With 43,207 Michigan ranks 7th in the nation in confirmed COVID-19 cases. The number of people who have died from the virus in the state is 4020 and is the third highest in the nation. The number of Michigan COVID-19 deaths as a percentage of cases, however, is the worst in the nation – above even New York State.

Governor Whitmer could not be reached for comment at press time.
